Jenni Dutton
Jenni works in Somerset. Trained as a painter at St Martins and Byam Shaw in London, Jenni moved on to make large wire and paper wrapped figures that developed into ‘dresses’. This surreal collection of life size un-wearable ‘dresses’ are made from unexpected materials – feathers, leaves, human hair – that seemingly take on aspects of the body once inside them. ‘A Walk in the Woods’, for example, records a walking experience, the dress made up from flora and fauna found on the wood floor.
She developed further the idea of body wrappings by creating free standing figurative assemblages in which combined smashed china crockery and figurines are fixed on to casts of mannequins. Each torso has its own distinct character and narrative. The introduction of small tableaux, created by cutting niches into the torsos, allowed a new feature to expand the themes.
2011 sees her returning to dress forms, particularly bodices, using cotton, lace and ephemeral objets.
Jenni’s sculpture has been exhibited in Taunton, Bath and London. Her greatest successes have been while exhibiting at art fairs in London where her work has been enthusiastically received.
